I have just started reading a biography of Socrates — The Hemlock Cup: Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life by Bettany Hughes. Now I know that writing a bio of Socrates is fraught with vast problems. No scholars, so far as I am aware, consider Plato’s accounts of Socrates as historically accurate, even though they do provide echoes of the historical Socrates. No matter.  This book is an outstanding piece of writing. Hughes really brings the Athens of Socrates’ day to life and even if some of the details of her account will most certainly be open to question she helps provide a vivid stage against which to understand the guy and Plato’s dialogues.

I have not read much of it yet but it looks really good.
