In March of 2012 I turned 40. It was relatively uneventful; although, I have to admit a slight but noticeable change in my outlook on life. Not sure I can put my finger on the shift, but something feels different.

I have former high school classmates who are showing off pictures of their new grandkids on Facebook, and I think to myself, Wow! That seems awfully early to be a grandparent. And yet, I imagine them seeing pictures of my little boys and thinking, Wow! That seems awfully old to have such young kids.

I’ve always kind of been late to the party. I suppose with parenting things are not much different. On a smaller scale, since turning 40, I’ve had several firsts. These are things that I don’t imagine doing once and never again. So at 40 I’ve started new hobbies.

First garden (built the beds myself!):

Kale, Chard, Strawberries, Onions, Broccoli, Potatoes, Violetta Bak Choy, Cilantro, Peppers

First professional soccer match (Portland Timbers vs. Aston Villa):

“When I root, I root for the Timbers!”

First family car camping trip:

Crazy boys on a hike

First backcountry overnight hiking adventure (see Charlie’s preview here):

Business trip?
